Back Pain Essentials - What Do You Need To Do Now!


When you first suffer back pain, are you one of those people who wait to see how things go? Are you someone who lives in hope that your back pain will miraculously disappear overnight? Don't worry you are in good company as the majority of back pain sufferers do the same.

It is a common thing to do, because most back pain will settle by itself within a few weeks. But what if it doesn't?

Are there things you can do to make sure it disappears within a few days or even possibly within a few hours? After all who wants to wait and hope that your back pain will disappear after a few weeks anyway?

So what can you do?

One of the simplest things is to use ice. Yes plain cold ice. If you use ice in the first 48 hours most back pain will ease and disappear within that time, and sometimes within the day.

Now please remember, if you have had a fall or major injury, use ice - but use it on the way to see your doctor or hospital. It is still essential to be checked over, if you have had an injury that has led to back pain.

But let's assume it is a minor injury, you have spent too much time in the garden, lifted one too many pieces of wood, work too hard or something similar...

As soon as your back pain occurs, put ice on it. Ice works as an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Most back pain initially loves ice. It will help it heal and remove pain quicker than anything else.

What you need to do is this...

Put ice on the area of pain; leave it on for ten minutes only. Then place heat on the area, again for ten minutes only. Then repeat this process and finally finish with ice for another ten minutes.

After 48 hours then finish with heat, as heat improves the blood supply and eases muscle tension. Most times you will not need to do this as your pain would have disappeared.

If you apply the ice/heat treatment every few hours, then within the day the majority of back pain will disappear. Even if it is a minor back pain issue, still use ice. It is people like you and me, who wait a few hours or days to "see how things go" who end up having pain for weeks.

Early intervention is the best approach for all back pain. Using ice is one simple technique you can use that can limit the time you spend in back pain.

This does not mean the process ends there. What you now need to do is learn ways to prevent your back pain occurring. Most back pain occurs not from large falls or injuries. It arrives after doing normal common everyday activities. Activities you have done a hundred times before. Yet today your back pain arrives.

For this to happen it means tension and stress on your muscles and joints has increased over days, weeks or months. Today is the day an overload occurs and back pain happens. Sure ice will ease your back pain now, but you need to learn simple and highly effective ways to remove and prevent back pain... permanently.

Children suffer from many diseases and disorders in their childhood days, but chronic back pain is a rare disorder that is found in them. Diskitis: This disorder occurs due to infections in the disk. Infection leads to high fever, back pain, muscle spasms coupled with behavioral irritability. If not taken care of the disorder at the early stages, there can occur acute complications in the later years of life. Treatment of this disorder includes bed rest coupled with a supervised course of antibiotics.
Pyelonephritis: If you were thinking that back pain could only occur due to some dysfunctionality in the spine, you were wrong. There also occurs a kidney infection that is a cause of back pain. In Pyelonephritis, children suffer due to a sharp pain that is usually on one side of the back. The pain is accompanied with high fever and nauseatic feelings. The child may also feel pain or a burning sensation while urinating.
Scheurman's kyphosis: This disorder is common in adolescents, especially males. The upper back takes a round shape, thus bending the whole spine. There are two forms of this disease. One is flexible kyphosis and the other is non-flexible kyphosis. The treatment requires bracing up of the back.
Spondylolisthesis: Children who suffer from spondylolysis have a slip of their 5th vertebra. The sacrum also dislocates. The severe cases of this disorder can only be corrected with a surgery.
Besides these, there are other causes of back pain in children. They are tumors or neoplasms, malnutrition, suffering due to trauma, muscle weakness, arthritis and some of the other infections. But theses reasons are generally rare.

Anyone who has ever had a long-term painful injury knows that negative or distressing emotions may accompany or perpetuate the initial injury.

The best way to treat chronic back pain syndromes is to prevent them. Although proficient early treatment does not always prevent an acute injury from turning into a chronic problem, it is a good insurance policy. Early treatment is especially important with injuries to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to prevent them from becoming weaker, less elastic and more pain-sensitive.

Using heat regularly on the painful areas of your back and doing specific back exercises can also decrease the amount of pain you endure and how frequently.

One of the best ways to get help for back pain, in both the acute and chronic soft tissue injuries is a hands-on approach that works to repair the injured tissues. How You Can Prevent Lower Back Pain


Lower back pain is created by your normal day to day activity. You bend and lift, you twist and turn and then you wake up or stand up and can't move. You now are a victim of lower back pain.

Your lower back pain can stop you from enjoying your leisure times and family times. You aren't able to get into your garden or do your household chores easily.

So you need to learn ways to help prevent this occurring.

Lower back pain is commonly caused by your normal daily activity, if you look at what you do the solution are very simple.

Each activity you do, whether it is bending or lifting or twisting, is working your lower back and other areas of your body. It is just like going to a gym for a work-out. The big difference is this...

Most gym work-outs last about an hour - yet you will spend three hours gardening. You may take two hours to vacuum your floor and do the housework. When you go to the gym you are told before you do any exercise you should warm up and when you are completed you need to warm down.

What would your gym instructor say if you decided to just get into your weights routine without a warm up? Would they sit back and say - "go for it, warm ups are over rated". Or are they more likely to encourage you to warm up, to prepare your self for the activity you are about to perform. The same for warm downs, they are wanting you to ease the muscles you have used to help them recover and to become stronger with time. All designed to limit injuries and aches and pains, including lower back pain.

My question is this - if you spend more time doing work around your house, if it involves lifting, bending and twisting, why do you not warm up or down?

As these activities are the most common cause of lower back pain, surely it is wise to prepare for them.

Warming up for household activity is easy. All you need to do is go for a five minute walk, simulate the task you are about to do - just without resistance. If you are going to garden then bend and twist like you intend to do, if you are going to vacuum, then lean over and simulate vacuuming just without the machine.

A few minutes doing this before the activity and a few after the activity will prevent a lot of lower back pain. A few minutes spent warming up and down can save you weeks of lower back pain.

A simple task to do that can help to easily prevent lower back pain. All you need to do now is implement it into your daily routines. Lower back pain does not need to be a common household problem. Remember, 80% of the adult population suffers from lower back pain, a simple warm up and warm down can reduce the lower back pain percentages dramatically.

Take a good look at the questions you circled. This method is not foolproof but it is a great way to see all the potential causes or root origins of your back pain. You should see the things you need to improve in order to help you live free of back pain.

While you do this, straighten one knee and relax also alternating right and left sides. You should straighten one knee while raising the opposite arm over head.

Procedure 2:

Sit on ball with back straight and knees bent 90 degrees. Then slowly raise arm over head, alternating the right and left. While doing this, also raise and lower heel, also alternating right and left. Lift the opposite limb alternately. Perform these exercises for a maximum of 5 minutes.

Do you notice the semblance of this lower back pain exercise? Yes, it resembles swimming. Swimming is by far the best exercise; notice how swimmers rarely have back muscle problems?

Some specific exercises can help your back. Others aim to gently stretch your back muscles. While some exercises are specifically designed as lower back pain exercises, living an active lifestyle (lots of exercise, good diet and plenty of rest) is the best way to overcome lower back pain. Swimming and walking are good overall exercises to improve your fitness.

As with any type of pain there are two different types (and low back pain is no exception): acute and chronic.

Acute low back pain is usually a problem that can work itself out over a period of time.

Chronic low back pain, however, can be responsible for aches and pains that last throughout your lifetime and it is the chronic back pain that lessens the quality of life for anyone who suffers from it.

In this article, we'll address the problems that are posed by acute back pain as well as chronic low back pain and we'll discuss some methods of getting rid of the pain.

Low back pain is one of the most commonly occurring medical conditions that send even the toughest among us to our doctor's office. Statistically, you have a very good chance at some point in your life suffering from some sort of lower back pain. The causes of acute low back pain are often very different than the causes of chronic low back pain.

Lower Back Pain


One of the most common problems of the elderly is that of lower back pain. This does not mean, however, that lower back pain or lumbago is not common in other age groups as well. Fortunately, it often subsides within a short time with little or no treatment.

Because the lumbar region of the back (the small of the back) undergoes considerable stress when a person twists or lifts, it can become sprained quite easily. The pain produced by lumbago or lower back pain makes movement painful and sufferers are generally unable to work during these episodes. The majority of sufferers recover in a week or two and require little or no medical treatment. Often, rest is all that is needed.

Causes

Although lower back pain is usually caused by a back condition, it can also be caused through other medical conditions.

A very common cause of lower back pain is that of muscle injury. This is usually brought about by stress which is normally the result of bending incorrectly or lifting while carrying excess weight. This type of back sprain is characterized by pain and stiffness that is evident within a few hours of the injury. It generally subsides within a day or two although more severe strains may last longer.

Some recurrent backaches are caused by inflammatory conditions such as osteoporosis. This condition is caused by the degeneration of the joint in the backbone through wear and tear and is often more painful in the morning. Another painful and persistent inflammatory condition that causes persistent lower back pain is called ankylosing spondylitis. A slipped or prolapsed disk can also be to blame for the discomfort of back pain.

Severe lower back pain can also be caused by a crush fracture which can result from a fall or other injury. A crush fracture happens when a vertebra collapses. Other medical causes are mestastases or secondary deposits of cancer and also spinal bone tumours.

Osteoporosis, a common condition of the elderly, weakens the bones and makes the pain of arthritis even more unbearable. It is caused by a reduction in the calcium content of the bones. Because the backbone is weakened, compression fractures become more likely and, as a result, there is severe lower back pain.

Another cause of lower back pain can be due to the uterus becoming tipped during childbirth. Kidney infections can also be a cause.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on movement usually begins within 2-24 hours of an injury or muscle tear. This can include any sprain or strain of the muscles or ligaments and is usually noticed after lifting heavy objects.

The abovementioned symptoms are similar in the event that a lumbar disk slips or is ruptured. However, in this instance the pain is more severe. The bck muscles go into painful spasms and the simple act of coughing or sneezing also creates pain in the back. Sciatica is different again in that the pain spreads from the back, down the buttock and down the leg.

Osteoporosis and other conditions caused by degenerative joint conditions come on gradually and is long term. The pain is generally mild to moderate but is recurrent over a period of several years

In some conditions such as fibroids which are harmless tumors in the uterus, as well as in the case of large abdominal tumor or pregnancy, the presence of lower back pain is only one of a number of symptoms.

Dangers

It is rare for lower back pain to be considered as dangerous although some untreated symptoms may become dangerous. One such symptom is an untreated disk which may be pressing on the spinal cord. This, if left untreated, could lead to paralysis. Also, lower back pain caused by infection in the spinal vertebrae may be dangerous as could secondary cancer though these conditions in the spinal region are very rare.

Treatment

Most strains and sprains of the back are easily treated and respond well to minimal treatment. Basically, the main treatment is rest by lying flat on a firm surface. Sometimes the use of an infrared lamp or a heat pack can be beneficial as it relaxes the muscles. Also, a gentle but firm massage and the application of liniment on the affected area, will normally give substantial relief. A painkiller such as acetaminophen should be taken. Lifting and carrying of heavy objects should be avoided during the recovery period.

Where there are serious medical causes, such as prolapsed disk, abdominal tumors, or an infection, the treatment is changed according to the condition. Often, in more chronic cases, it may be advisable to wear surgical belts or surgical corsets during the day.

Using proper lifting and carrying techniques can often prevent lower back pain as can the use of swimming and other exercises that strengthen the back muscles. In the elderly, persistent attacks of lower back pain may be a natural part of the aging process and therefore, something that must be accepted.

Most people who suffer from an attack of lower back pain make a total recovery within a week or two and do so with little or no treatment. In the case of a protruding disk, recovery may take several weeks but there is normally no need for surgery.

How to prevent lower back pain

DO

1. Bend the knees and keep the spine straight when lifting or carrying heavy objects

2. Wear sensible and well fitting shoes

3. Whether at home or at work, find a comfortable position from which to work

4. Be careful of twisting and bending when getting in and out of motor vehicles

5. If advised, wear a support brace or corset to support your back

DON'T

1. Lift or carry anything heavy when recovering from lower back pain

2. Overexert your back. Always ask for help if necessary

3. Sleep on a soft bed. A firm mattress is better for your back

4. Twist and stoop to get into motor vehicles

5. Ignore the need for medical help if lower back pain persists

Relief Of Back Pain While Healing


Back pain, especially lower back pain, is one of the most common types of pain reported in the U.S. It is probably just as common in many other countries, since it is often brought on by improper lifting techniques or unaccustomed exercise.

Most back pain will resolve itself in two to four weeks, but until it does, what can you do for relief of back pain?

Initial Relief of Back Pain

For immediate relief of sudden back pain, try lying flat on the floor on your back. Raise your legs and place them on a chair. This position will relieve the pressure on your back. Remain on the floor until you begin to get relief of back pain.

Ongoing Relief of Back Pain

In the first weeks, there is a tried and proven regimen for relief of back pain. Using most or all of the following in conjunction with one another will give maximum relief of back pain.

1. Rest

Most of us naturally resort to rest for relief of back pain. This is good when done in moderation. However, you should not take to your bed and stay there. Relief of back pain depends on as much activity as is comfortable. Getting up and moving around can ease the stiffness and hasten the anticipated ultimate relief of back pain.

2. Heat

Heat gives relief of back pain by relaxing the muscles. By dilating the blood vessels, heat improves the flow of oxygen to the affected area, reducing the pain and relieving muscle spasms. Use a heating pad on a medium setting to avoid burning the skin. Apply heat for no more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time, since constant heat for prolong periods can negatively impact organs in the abdominal area. Never sleep with a heating pad for relief of back pain.

3. Ice

Ice packs, or cold packs, are another part of your regimen for relief of back pain. Ice packs may be as simple as crushed ice wrapped in a towel. Or use an ice bag or professional ice pack. If neither is available, wrap a bag of frozen peas or corn in a towel. Ice works in an opposite manner from that of heat. Ice decreases blood vessel size, and reduces the flow of blood to the affected are. In doing this, cold reduces inflammation in the back, and provides relief of back pain. Avoid prolonged contact with cold packs. Instead, alternate heat and ice, 20 to 30 minutes each for maximum relief of back pain.

4. Exercise

Relief of back pain must include exercise, especially stretching exercises. Many people avoid exercise, but physicians recommend it highly for relief of back pain. Stretching exercises reduce stiffness in the back, and may relieve compression on the spine. In addition, you will strengthen the muscles while you are healing. Strong core muscles will help prevent future back trouble. Ask your doctor or therapist for exercises suited to your condition.

5. Massage

Massage is important for relief of back pain, whether it is administered by a professional therapist or by on of the available massage cushions. Massage can stimulate blood flow to the affected area. It can also relax the muscles, giving the desired relief of back pain.

6. OTC Medications

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are also useful in relief of back pain. Choose analgesic medications such as aspirin or acetaminophen, both of which are intended for relief of back pain and other similar pain. You may also want to try OTC medications that are spread on the back. Ben Gay, Icy Hot, and Zostrix are examples of topical analgesics that give relief of back pain. If your back pain is accompanied by swelling, consider using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to reduce swelling and give further relief of back pain. Nonprescription NSAIDS include such medications as Advil, Motrin, Actron, Orudis, or Aleve. Check with your physician to be sure these will not react negatively with any prescriptions you may be taking.

CAUTION: If you continue to have pain after two to four weeks, please see your physician for relief of back pain. See your physician immediately if you have any of these other symptoms:

* Leg pain below the knee

* Leg or groin numbness

* Fever

* Nausea or vomiting

* Stomach pain

* Weakness

* Sweating

* Loss of control over bathroom functions
